How to Create Your Personal Values

Your values aren’t something you “pick” randomly—they come from your experiences, priorities, and what makes you feel fulfilled. Creating them is about identifying what truly matters to you right now! Refine and align your personal values by first identifying what matters, then building those core values into daily actions that matter most.

Identify What Matters:

Step 1: Reflect on What Matters Most

Start by thinking about moments when you felt:

  • Proud

  • Fulfilled

  • Energized

  • At peace

Step 2: Identify Themes

Look for patterns in your answers. For example:

  • Feeling your best during movements of self-care → Health

  • Enjoying time with loved ones → Connection or Family

  • Feeling proud of growth → Learning or Achievement

Action Item: Write down 5–10 words that reflect your own patterns and themes.

Step 3: Define What Each Value Means to You

Values are personal—so give them your own meaning.

  • Health = having energy to get through the workday and feel good after

  • Balance = setting boundaries between work and personal time

Action Item: Using those 5–10 words to make your values actionable, not abstract. Use the examples above.

Build Your Values:

List 3 Core Values.

Narrow your list down to 3 core values that:

  1. Feel most important right now

  2. Align with your current goals or lifestyle

  3. Motivate you to take action

Think: “If I focused on these 3, I would feel more aligned and in control.”

Turn Values into Action

Values only create momentum when you live them.

Action Item: What is one small action I can take to reflect this value?

  • Energy → Take a 10-minute walk midday

  • Connection → Call a friend this week

  • Balance → Log off work on time twice this week
